Spring picks from our Junior Range Manager, Emma

It’s officially spring, meaning the season for lighter layers, pretty prints and sandals has finally arrived.

With Damart’s spring/summer collection, there is a huge variety of pieces which are perfect for the warmer months. Here are my favourite picks to take you into the new season in style!

For me, nothing says nice weather like a pair of lightweight white trousers. This pair are really flattering thanks to their straight cut, and are also extremely versatile – they really will go with everything. I love when spring comes around and I can put away my dark winter jeans in exchange for something more lightweight!

I think these trousers work perfectly with our beige slim fit top. What’s great about this top is that it can easily take you from day to night, thanks to its slightly shimmering fabric. Our espadrille-style peep toe wedges are the perfect shoe to match this outfit. Espadrilles are everywhere this season, and they’re a great purchase as they’re so wearable, and don’t really ever go out of fashion. I’d add a charm necklace as an extra touch and to tie the whole look together.

This spring outfit is perfectly polished off with our floral printed jacket. This is such a beautiful print; I just love wearing florals when the sun is shining! The classic cut of this jacket means that you’ll wear it time and time again, making it a great investment piece for seasons to come.

Don’t be afraid to experiment this spring, visit for more options and styles to revamp your spring wardrobe.

Damart warms up fund-raising effort to North Pole

We are delighted to have donated much needed thermals to retired Leeds GP, Professor Phil Heywood who is skiing to the North Pole this week to raise money for Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO).

Professor Heywood, 69, is hoping to raise £30,000 in 2014 to help fund VSO’s work to reduce the number of mothers who die in pregnancy and childbirth in the developing world. He has spent the past five years working in Cambodia, South Sudan and Vietnam working for VSO.

Our Marketing and Ecommerce Director, Phil Anderson said: “Professor Heywood is an inspirational figure. Since retiring he has continued to help others and is now taking on the ambitious task of skiing to the North Pole. As the inventor of thermal, the least we can do is give him some of our warmest thermals to keep him warm while he skies more than 100 miles across the snow and ice where temperatures will sometimes reach -40. We wish him the very best of luck.”

Professor Heywood said: “More than 6,000 women worldwide die every week from childbirth and pregnancy, I’ve witnessed first-hand how distressing this can be and want to help fund VSO so they can send skilled professionals to help local communities develop their own life-saving skills.

“I know it’s going to be hard work and very cold but I’m a keen cross-country skier and I’ve been training by running and by dragging tyres round fields. I’m very grateful to Damart for giving me thermals for the trip; it will be very cold and keeping warm, especially at night, will be crucial.”

Meet the stylists

Meet our Damart stylists, Emma Gouthelis and Rose O’Connor.

Emma and Rose are both based at Damart’s headquarters in Bingley, West Yorkshire, and in the coming months will be on hand to give tips on tricky styling questions, talk about the key trends of the season and how to wear the latest Damart pieces to suit your shape, size and personal style.

My name is… Emma Gouthelis
My title is… Junior Range Manager
When I was little I wanted to be… either a physiotherapist or a fashion designer – I’m lucky enough to have fashion as a career and I keep fitness as a hobby!
I would describe my personal style as… a mix of affordable high street pieces. I like to invest in wardrobe staples to see me through more than one season, and throw in a couple of more trendy pieces which are ‘in’ that season.
I could not live without… my sewing machine – designing and making clothes and home furnishings is one of my favourite things to do outside of work.
My style icon is… Kate Middleton, as she always sticks to feminine, classic pieces which will never go out of style.
My favourite piece from the current Damart collection is… the wrap dress; the cut is really flattering and the print is so bright and bold!

The one item in my wardrobe that I wear season after season is… my pair of skinny fit blue jeans.
Before working at Damart I… got a fashion degree which covered styling, promotion, design and manufacturing. I then set up independently as a womenswear designer, producing made-to-measure garments such as bridal gowns, bridesmaid, flower girl and prom dresses.
On an average day at work I… work with the website team on email and web product campaigns, create spreads for the USA and UK catalogues, liaise with the PR team to help provide product and select garments to be featured in advertisements.
The best thing about my job is… the varied nature of what I do. We have to adapt what we offer depending on whether the content is for catalogues, website, advertising or overseas, and there’s a good mix of creativity and analysis to keep me on my toes.

My name is… Rose O’Connor
My title is… Range Manager’s Assistant
When I was little I wanted to be… either an archaeologist or a DJ!
I would describe my personal style as… a mixture of girly and grungy. I wear a lot of feminine blouses and dresses but with chunky boots to toughen them up.
My favourite classic style icon is… Twiggy, as she has been consistently stylish for decades! I love to look at her outfits over the years for inspiration.
My favourite pieces from the current Damart collection are… the gorgeous printed trousers; they’re perfect for summer holidays. I also love the striped sailor neck t-shirt – nautical is one of my favourite trends which never seems to go out of fashion.

Before working at Damart I… studied Fashion Buying at university, then did a placement year abroad, involving two six-month internships in Germany and the Netherlands with Adidas and Mexx respectively. I also did a short Textiles and Manufacturing course in Taiwan for a company who now create the fabric for Liverpool FC’s kit.
On an average day at work I… work with various other teams; this might include liaising with the website team to decide which products to use on emails and homepages, assisting Emma when she puts together USA catalogues or working alongside the PR team to supply press samples.
The best thing about my job is… working alongside the PR team which is always interesting and varied – whether it’s styling competition winners, visiting charities to donate clothing or arranging outfits for fashion shows.

Henry Paul trials Damart’s Thermolactyl Active base layer

Henry Paul, Director of Rugby at Bradford & Bingley RFC, tells us about his trial of Damart's Thermolactyl Active base layer:

"Keeping fit during the rugby season requires a lot of training. I may no longer be on the field, but training is just as important to me now as it ever was. I’m always on the look-out for kit that not only looks good, but also keeps my muscles warm and helps prevent injuries.

"This season I’ve been trialling Damart’s new Thermolactyl Active base-layer range. It comes in blue, black or pewter with a long sleeved top and leggings and has a nice, snug fit as you would expect for a base-layer. It’s seamless which gives you maximum flexibility so there’s no restrictions on your movement, however you are training.

"I’ve worn it throughout the winter and although it’s not been as cold as it can be this season, for a Kiwi running first thing on a dark winter’s morning, three degrees feels freezing trust me.

"This base-layer, worn under my top and shorts has kept me warm and dry the whole time. The insulation means I not only feel warm as soon as I put them on, but I also stay warm even as I exercise because the clever fabric wicks away any moisture and stops me feeling cold and clammy as I start to cool down.

"I’ve worn them for training outside and they are also good to put on after a training session if you have tired muscles as they keep them nice and warm helping to prevent any problems."

Excellent customer service standard

This January we were delighted to be awarded a top customer service award by the prestigious Institute of Customer Service, ServiceMark accreditation.

To achieve the ServiceMark we had to demonstrate how we deliver customer service against a world class standard, validated by the Institute of Customer Service. A sample of customers and all Damart colleagues were asked to complete detailed questionnaires about the level of customer experience we offer our customers, culminating in a two-day audit of our Yorkshire headquarters and central warehouse.

Our Director of Customer Service, Stuart Creeley said: “We are absolutely thrilled to have achieved the Institute’s ServiceMark accreditation. Our customers are at the heart of everything we do and the beauty of the ServiceMark process is that it encourages you to ensure that all colleagues feel engaged with, and empowered to look after, our customers whatever their role in the business. So it’s not just the colleague in the contact centre, but also the colleague who designs the catalogues, runs our promotions, picks out, packs up and despatches orders or runs the accounts department.”

He added: “It was heartening to receive a top customer satisfaction score from our customers and the learnings from the colleague survey has led to real improvements in the way we work together as a business, improved our communications with each other and led to a much more positive feel around the business. This can only benefit our customers.”

Jo Causon, chief executive, Institute of Customer Service, says: “ServiceMark is increasingly recognised as the standard for customer service excellence. Over 100 organisations have completed or are working towards ServiceMark. It enables organisations to benchmark themselves against best practice, gain a better insight into their customers’ needs and develop strategies to meet them.”

In other upcoming news we have also been shortlisted in the HR Employee Engagement Strategy of the Year Award category for the UK Customer Satisfaction Awards with the winner being announced on February 25.

Damart donates thermals to charity camping trip

As you may know, we’re experts when it comes to thermals, so we donated much needed thermals to a recent endurance camping trip which was held to raise money for the local community.

The excursion to the Galloway Forest in Scotland was organised by Tesco’s Local Community Champions, an organisation which aims to raise funds to help the local community. All the attendants on the trip were sponsored for the endurance camping trip, with funds going to Skipton YMCA and Diabetes UK.

Because we’re known for our thermals and warm outerwear, we stepped in to help the local fundraising effort as the campers faced the harsh Scottish weather.

Tesco’s Community Champion, Keith Moorby who organised the trip commented: “We knew the camping trip up in Scotland would certainly not be warm, and we were so pleased when Damart offered to kit us out. Their fantastic range of thermals kept us all very warm throughout the trip!”
