Style Makeover 2015 - Meet our winners

Wanting advice on how to dress to disguise her tummy won mum of two grown-up children, Sue Williams a two night stay in a boutique hotel in Manchester after she took part in Damart’s Facebook style competition.

More than 200 women asked professional stylist, Julie Dickson for advice during the takeover with Sue being picked as one of three lucky winners.

Her prize included a day of being pampered with her hair and make-up by make-up artist Collette Casey, who can be found making up the celebrities who often grace the red carpet, and choosing outfits with the help of Julie who styles many well-known clothing brands, including Damart, for photo shoots and journalist Look Books.

Sue, 49, said: “I found Julie’s advice so helpful. I suppose I’m stuck in a rut in the way that I dress and avoid lots of colour and drawing attention to myself because I’m self-conscious about having a bit of a tummy. Julie made me experiment, particularly when it came to colour, and I was amazed how good I looked in clothes that I wouldn’t have thought of wearing.

“Julie also gave me tips on wearing a tummy control vest top which meant I could wear jackets and long cardigans that I would normally shy away from. I loved trying on all the different outfits and knowing I could take them home. My son is getting married in India next year and the tops will be great for that trip.”

Once Sue had selected her outfits, Collette took over with hair and make-up. She said: “Sue likes definition around the eyes but not too much as she wears contact lenses so although I used an eye-liner I softened it some satin eye shadow in the same shade. Sue always wears her hair straight, but we decided to have a bit of fun and go with some curls.”

Sue said: “It was amazing to see the final look, I loved how I looked in the clothes and with my hair and make-up. I loved the colour and the curls, it all made me feel much taller and more confident. I’m definitely going to be more experimental in the future, now I know how I can look and it makes me feel.”

Once she was ready, Sue had her photograph taken by a professional photography before joining her daughter and the other winner, Ann, and her son for a celebratory champagne afternoon tea in the hotel.

A day of pampering was a big change for Sue who can often be found holding the ladders for her husband in all kinds of weather. She said: “I work for my husband’s security company  which fits and services intruder alarms and I often get the glamorous job of holding the bottom of the ladder, usually in the wind and the rain so I’m normally dressed in jeans and a waterproof coat. This made such  wonderful change.”

Style Makover 2015 - Meet our winners

Sprightly 78-year-old Ann Collins was overjoyed when she won a makeover with a professional stylist and make-up artist after taking part in the Damart style advice Facebook competition.

Ann wanted advice on how she could dress smartly for everyday but be comfortable at the same time. And that question won her a two night stay in a boutique hotel in Manchester, as well as a day of being pampered with her hair and make-up being done by make-up artist Collette Casey who can be found making up the celebrities who often grace the red carpet and choosing outfits with the help of stylist Julie Dickson who styles many well-known clothing brands including Damart for photoshoots and journalist Look Books.

Ann, who lives in Exeter, said: “I couldn’t believe it when I won, it was wonderful. We had such a lovely couple of days and the makeover day was fabulous. Julie showed me how to wear outfits I would never have thought of choosing. The jeggings were a revelation, they felt so comfortable and yet looked really smart and she introduced so many colours which really lifted the outfits – I would never have thought of an orange coat, but I love it!”

Once her outfits were picked, Ann relaxed while Collette gave her a professional make-over. Ann said: “I must admit I shed a tear when she revealed the new me in the mirror. The lovely clothes, my hair and my beautiful make-up, I felt fantastic. It was such a treat.”

Ann then had her photograph taken by a professional photography before joining her son and the other winner, Sue, and her daughter for a celebratory champagne afternoon tea in the hotel.

Stylist Julie said: “It was lovely helping Ann choose outfits which I knew she would like once she tried them on. Damart jeggings are great for the older woman because they don’t cling, rather they look more like a jean but with all the comfort of leggings. I think we totally converted Ann who was looking at them in all the different colours.

“I was also able to suggest to Ann that she try some smaller sizes which actually fit her much better. So many of us pick a size and then always buy in that size, it’s much better to regularly check you’re wearing the right size. Again, I know that as people get older they often don’t want to be wearing clothes that could be too tight or look clingly which would make them feel uncomfortable but Damart designs all its pieces with this in mind. It really does focus on the older woman.”

Before she retired, Ann worked and a Youth and Community Worker. When her husband, Charles, died in 1998, she felt quite lost for a couple of years until at the age of 63 she decided to take a job as a rep for a travel company in working Portugal for a few years. She said: “I loved it, it was great fun.”

Ann was a volunteer for the Samaritans for many years and currently volunteers at her local GP surgery.  She feels it is important to keep physically and mentally active, going for daily walks by the Quay in Exeter with her partner Peter.

“With Julie’s help, I feel quite excited about going out in my new outfits and seeing the comments I will get. It’s made me feel more adventurous and confident in how I look.  I feel like a million dollars and that’s a great feeling.”

As Bingley prepares to celebrate its new ‘Walkers are Welcome’ status, staff at Damart are stepping into their walking boots as they prepare to take part in our very own walk.

We’ve teamed up with ‘Walkers are Welcome’, a nationwide network of communities endorsed for their amenities and hospitality for walkers, to sponsor the ‘Damart Healthy Heart Walk’, a two mile walk along the Five Rise Locks.

Linda Montgomery, HR Director, said: We are delighted to be partnering with Bingley Walkers are Welcome by sponsoring our very own walk and be one of the sponsors of the launch event.

“We have worked hard over the years to encourage healthy living for our colleagues. Through our work with Heart Research UK we have introduced a number of initiatives including healthy eating and exercise classes available to all employees. We are delighted to now be able to promote these beautiful local walks that our colleagues and local residents can get involved with.”

Walkers will come together at 10am on the 11th April when the town will celebrate the launch of its ‘Walkers are Welcome’ status which will give people the chance to join in the celebrations and take part in up to six walks suitable for a range of abilities and ages.
